Argentina goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez explains his Golden Glove celebration

Argentina goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez has explained why he did his lewd celebration after collecting the Golden Glove trophy.

Martinez played a crucial role throughout the tournament as he helped Argentina clinch a third World Cup triumph in the nation’s history.

During their run to the final, the Aston Villa stopper made some crucial stops, especially in the last 16 clash against Australia. The 30-year-old also made some great saves in the penalty shoot-out against the Netherlands in the quarter-finals.

In what was a mouthwatering clash of the titans in the final, Martinez played his part as he made a stunning last-gasp save to deny French forward Randal Kolo Muani from scoring what would have been the winning goal.

In the penalty shootout that followed, Martinez made a huge save to prevent Kingsley Coman’s effort from finding the back of the net. Argentina ended up winning the World Cup after their 4-2 shootout victory.

During the trophy presentation, Martinez was presented with the Golden Glove award as he was named the best goalkeeper of the tournament.

Upon receiving his trophy, Martinez placed it near his crotch area and gestured towards the crowd.

Fans were quick to react to his celebration.

One said: “Martinez cannot be real, what a man.”

Another commented: “Martinez proves just why men will never grow up.”

A third fan added: “Hahahaha oh my days Martinez did not just do that in front of world leaders.”

Now, Martinez himself has explained the reason behind his celebration.

He said: “I did it because the French booed me. Pride does not work with me.”

On Argentina’s victory, Martinez said: “We suffered a lot. We thought we were in control but they managed to come back. It was a very complicated game. Our destiny was to suffer.

“They had one last chance to win [when he saved Randal Kolo Muani’s late shot], luckily I was able to stop it with my foot. This is a moment I’ve always dreamed of living, I have no words for it. I left very young for England and I would like to dedicate this victory to my family.”

The 2022 triumph meant that Argentina are now three time world champions. Whilst France were unable to become the first side since Brazil in 1962 to retain their crown.
