Premier League xG table proves Man Utd are in 'false' position as surprise top four confirmed

The Premier League table based on expected goal data proves that Manchester United are lucky to be as high as they are in the standings, while Chelsea supporters may feel aggrieved.
Goals have been hard to come by for Erik ten Hag's side this season, having netted just 16 times in 13 Premier League games so far - the joint-eighth least in the division.
£72 million summer signing Rasmus Hojlund is still yet to get off the mark in the competition, with captain Bruno Fernandes and Scott McTominay currently the club's joint top scorers with three goals each.
Although United's comprehensive 3-0 victory over Everton on the weekend left them sixth place in the top-flight standings, supporters may feel concerned by their position based on xG data.

According to data from Understat, the Red Devils would be 11th in the table based on their xG tally, which stands at 20.51.
Meanwhile, the top four makes for very interesting reading. Manchester City top the charts with an xG of 29.70, closely followed by Liverpool (29.10).
Newcastle United take third spot (28.41), with Chelsea, who currently occupy 10th place in the league, incredibly rounding off the top four with an xG of 27.73.
Fascinatingly, current league leaders Arsenal are way down in seventh with an xG of 24.88, with both Aston Villa and Brentford ahead of them.
