Liverpool favourites to sign Spanish wonderkid Gabri Veiga

Liverpool have emerged as favourites to sign Celta Vigo midfielder Gabri Veiga, according to reports.

The Reds are on the verge of signing Alexis Mac Allister from Brighton after transfer expert Fabrizio Romano confirmed the Argentinian had agreed a five-year deal with the Merseyside club.

"Alexis Mac Allister to Liverpool, here we go! Full agreement completed on the contract - understand it will be valid until June 2028. Five year deal. #LFC," tweeted Romano on Monday.

"Liverpool will pay the buy out clause in the next days, way less than reported £60m fee. Medical tests in 24/48h. Done."

However, Jurgen Klopp is wasting no time in finding fresh transfer targets, with Veiga the latest name to be rumoured with a move to Anfield.

The 20-year-old attacking midfielder has enjoyed a breakthrough season in La Liga, notching 11 goals and providing a further four assists.

He recently added to the interest surrounding him, scoring a brace against Spanish champions Barcelona on Sunday and leading his side to a 2-1 victory.

Liverpool favourites to sign Veiga

An array of Premier League clubs have shown interest in Veiga including Arsenal, Manchester United and Newcastle. While Chelsea have also entered the race, according to the Guardian.

However, it is Liverpool who hold the advantage, claim the Northern Echo, in a report which states the club's interest is at an "advanced stage".

"As things stand, Anfield is regarded as Veiga’s likeliest destination once the transfer window officially reopens later this month", the publication adds.

Fellow interested party Newcastle are said to be aware of Liverpool's pursuit, and while Jurgen Klopp’s side cannot offer Champions League football next season, they "have already completed a lot of the groundwork to pave the way for a successful deal."

The Reds are likely to have to trigger Veiga’s release clause, which is reported to be around £35m in order to land the Spaniard.

But it is said that "there is a willingness to meet Celta Vigo’s demands in order to push through an agreement."

Celta Vigo's president, Carlos Mourino is already resigned to losing his prized asset, admitting there is "nothing" they can do and that the decision ultimately rests with Veiga.

“We do not want to sell Gabri Veiga, but they are going to buy him from us and there is nothing we can do,” Mourino said in an interview with Mundo Deportivo. “We know some of their offers, and it is impossible to get there. There are several teams behind Gabri.

“Of the top ten in the Premier (League), four have asked for him. For us, and to make it clear, he is not for sale. We have nothing to negotiate with anyone – we refer to the clause. The decision is Gabri’s – he will play wherever he wants.”
