Lionel Messi praises 'excellent' Liverpool player that's not Alexis Mac Allister, fans say 'he knows ball'

Liverpool fans are hailing Lionel Messi's ball knowledge after he praised one of the club's star players - and it's not Alexis Mac Allister.

Liverpool star Mac Allister featured in Argentina's crushing 2-0 defeat to Uruguay last Friday.

He wasn't the only Liverpool player in action during the feisty World Cup qualifier at the La Bombonera.

Darwin Nunez led the line as he scored his side's second goal of the game three minutes from time after finishing smartly following a counter-attack.

Uruguay's tactics frustrated the world champions as Messi complimented their tactics while singling out the 24-year-old.

The eight-time Ballon d'Or winner said: "Uruguay are good at rebounding and playing in space on counter attack. They have excellent players for that like Darwin [Nunez]."

Liverpool fans on social media loved Messi's comments about Nunez.

One X user wrote: "Messi backs Nunez! There's no way he doesn't become a top level striker with all his talents."

A second said: "Messi knows ball."

A third added: "No doubt in my mind Nunez will make it at Liverpool. Even Messi knows he's a great player."

Another commented: "Nunez gets the Messi seal of approval, and soon, the rest of the world's!"

Nunez joined the Anfield outfit in the summer of 2022 for a club-record £85 million.

He scored 15 goals in all competitions in his debut campaign in England following his switch from Benfica.

This season, he has seven goals in all competitions to his name, including a heroic brace against Newcastle United.

Messi's approval of Nunez clearly shows the forward has undeniable talent, having taken a period of time to settle at Liverpool.
