Jurgen Klopp suggests why Darwin Nunez squared up to Pep Guardiola at full-time

Jurgen Klopp spoke on the incident between Darwin Nunez and Pep Guardiola in a post-match interview, providing a potential reason as to why it happened.

Manchester City failed to win at home in the league for the first time this season as Trent Alexander-Arnold cancelled out Erling Haaland's 50th Premier League goal with a sweet finish.

The champions thought they scored a second before Liverpool's equaliser, but VAR backed referee Chris Kavanagh's decision that Alisson was fouled by Manuel Akanji before Ruben Dias slotted home.

When Guardiola was asked about the incident with Nunez: "Nothing happened. He is stronger than me! There is no problem.”

Guardiola also felt like his side deserved to win after holding Liverpool to just two chances, but Liverpool typically fought back to steal a point.

The City manager reflected: “I am so pleased with the performance. After eight years here, when Liverpool run you think ‘oh my God.’ When they run, it is still heavy metal and sometimes all you can do is pray - but we limited them to just two chances.

“We had eight or nine chances, but football is like that. Statistics, who deserved to score more, that doesn’t count.”

Jurgen Klopp on the other hand seemed to be shocked by the altercation, saying: "I am the wrong person to ask,"

"We’re not fierce rivals (with City), we are just rivals. But I am not sure Darwin Nunez knows about any historical rivals.”

The Liverpool manager also thought his team made a statement with the way they fought back from being 1-0 down at the Etihad, commenting: "We have passed a test. I am not sure it was THE test, but coming here to face this team is the hardest game in the world.

“We came here with a team that has been together a lot longer than this one and we went under the wheels.

City looked the most likely team to win, but we had chances on the counter-attack. We have beaten City before with even less chances. I didn’t like our body language at half-time and I told the players that there was a goal for us in the second half.”

Liverpool are now just one point shy of City who sit atop the Premier League table prior to Arsenal's clash against Brentford on Saturday evening.
