Ange Postecoglou issues clear verdict on Chelsea's lavish spending, answers if he'd do the same at Spurs

Ange Postecoglou gave a surprising answer when asked about Chelsea's lavish spending - and explained whether he would do the same as Tottenham boss.

It's fair to say that Postecoglou's early reign at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium has gone pretty well.

The Australian took over at the North London club in the summer and was almost immediately deprived of his captain and star player Harry Kane after the striker completed a move to German giants Bayern Munich.

However, the former Celtic boss has overseen an augmentation of the Spurs squad, bringing in the likes of James Maddison, Micky van de Ven and Brennan Johnson to add to the talent already at the club.

And it's gone about as well as it could have so far, with Spurs sitting second in the table, a point behind Manchester City with a game in hand, and are now the only side in the Premier League still yet to taste defeat this season.

That game in hand for Spurs comes on Monday evening when they host Chelsea.

The Blues are now managed by former Tottenham boss Mauricio Pochettino, who took his old club to the Champions League final in 2019.

With a win, Spurs know they will return back to the summit of the Premier League - and given the current of both teams, that is certainly on the cards.

It has been a difficult start to life at Stamford Bridge for Pochettino, with Chelsea currently 12th in the Premier League table and only three wins so far this campaign in the division.

Todd Boehly has been in charge of Chelsea since May 2022, but even in that short space of time that he has been chairman of the Stamford Bridge club, around £1bn has been spent on bringing new players to the club.

But Postecoglou, though he has of course spent money on players during his short time at Spurs, does not necessarily want the levels that Chelsea have spent to bring in fresh faces.

The Spurs boss believes that just spending big fees on the best players constantly is not the way to have success, and feels there needs to be a balance when it comes to assembling a squad.

As per BBC Sport, Postecoglou said: "I've always said I've never felt it is about just spending money. That's been proved time and time again.

"If you get it all right then you've got a pretty strong case, but there's always a limit to every team. You can't have 24 world-class players. That will never work. It's been proven that it doesn't work.

"It's about having a squad that's balanced, guys that are committed to a cause. Having guys that maybe aren't going to play every game, but every time they play they are going to make a huge impact for you because they buy into what you are trying to build.

"Just spending endless money to get the best players has been proven that it is not the answer. The answer is to get the right chemistry in your team.

"I don't think you can do that if you just get the 24 best players in the world. That's a headache I definitely don't want."
